Stay safe on Swindon’s roads this Christmas

Contrary to popular belief, the most dangerous day of the year on Britain’s roads is not over the Christmas or New Year period. However, that does not mean drivers should let their guard down on the way home from the office party or Christmas dinner with the in-laws.

Swindon Accident Solicitors urges everybody to take care on the roads over the festive period. Our professional experience dealing with accident claims tells us that a combination of inclement weather and ‘tired and emotional’ drivers will be upon us long before January 29th, which is officially the worst day of the year (74% more accidents than on a typical day).

Here are a few tips on how to stay safe on the roads this Christmas.

  1. Pack an emergency kit – blankets, extra layers of clothes, a high-vis jacket, a torch, a spade. Make sure your mobile is fully-charged.
  2. Clear snow and ice so that you have a clear view out of all windows, not just the windscreen.
  3. Check your windscreen washer is topped up with fluid and that your wipers are fit for purpose.
  4. Turn on your headlights – see and be seen!
  5. Drive slowly and allow extra time for journeys.
  6. Don’t tailgate the vehicle in front of you. When roads are slippery it can take 10 times longer to stop.
  7. Use low gears to help maintain traction in icy conditions.
  8. Avoid the Magic Roundabout (just kidding!).
If you have been injured in a road traffic accident, speak to a specialist solicitor. Call Swindon Accident Solicitors today on 01793 425595. 'Looking after your claim. Looking after you.'
