Swindon workers entitled to compensation for workplace accidents, whether they happen on building sites or at building societies.

Construction or finance? Education or the arts?  New data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed which industries dominate in every region of the UK, and not surprisingly, those results have a knock-on effect on the number of workplace accidents in different cities and towns.

According to the ONS, workers in Swindon “specialise in the financial and insurance sectors”. This means that there is a higher concentration of these jobs here (compared to the national average) than for any other industry. Given that roofers or secret agents have more chance of being injured at work than bankers or insurance agents, you might conclude that Swindon’s workplaces are an accident free zone! It would be a false conclusion.

If you have an accident at work and are injured because your employer failed to provide a safe place of work, then you may be entitled to compensation, regardless of whether the accident took place in a bank or on a building site.

If you work in an office or call centre you are unlikely to be injured by heavy machinery or falling scaffolding, but you could be involved in an accident because your employer has not kept walkways clean or tidy. If you trip on packaging or slip on a spillage and your injuries mean you take time off work and lose wages, contact Swindon Accident Solicitors about claiming compensation.

An employer’s responsibility for keeping you safe at work covers adequate maintenance of offices, shops and schools, not just building sites and warehouses. If you have been injured by falling on a dodgy step or an old handrail has given way, then you may be entitled to compensation.

Not all accidents at work and by extension, not all compensation claims, are outwardly dramatic. Falls from chairs may not grab the headlines, but they can lead to nasty back injuries. Making a claim can also help lead to changes in your workplace that could prevent the same thing happening to someone else in the future.

After finance and insurance, the ONS reveals the next most over-represented sectors in Swindon include water supply, sewerage and waste management, all higher risk professions. In 2017, no less than twenty people died working in refuse collection in the UK.

The most common cause of death in 2016 was falling, which accounted for 268 deaths. Perhaps not surprisingly, roles that involve working at great heights like construction and scaffolding are among the most dangerous on the list, but not the most dangerous. According to the ONS, farmers are most at risk from accidents at work with 167 deaths last year.
